Brain Freeze

If you're old enough to recall Gropin' Joe's role in the Drug War, and him firing a bunch of White House staffers earlier this year for having once smoked marijuana, then you aren't the least bit surprised to see him screwing over DC by siding with fascists... oh, I'm sorry, the GOP... against the citizens of DC — who, I might remind you, voted 70% to legalize cannabis...

...which somehow brings us around to Gropin' Joe's love of ice cream — and his new favorite flavor, the "Brain Freeze"...

It's A Gas!

Every year the US House of Representatives' Oversight Committee votes to approve the city budget of Washington, DC. Imagine, for a moment, that you live in any other city in the US, and your city can't pass a budget or fund the implementation of new laws without the approval of a bunch of politicians hundreds of miles away who don't even live in your state. That's pretty much the situation we're looking at here in the District Of Columbia.

In every session for the past four years, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) has inserted a "rider" into the budget bill, preventing the District Of Columbia from passing laws to establish a framework and budget for implementing the legal sale of cannabis in Washington, DC. As of 2014, it's been legal to possess, grow and consume cannabis (on private property), but we're still trapped in a "gray market" or "sharing economy" in which actual cash sales are illegal — thanks to Rep. Harris.

The Plant Belongs to the People!

Another whack at Mayor Bowser's flaw-riddled Safe Cannabis Sales Act, this time on the provisions limiting homegrow, inspired by this tweet from DC lawyer and activist Paul Zukerberg:

DC Council: Give US a "Fair Shot"!

Needless to say, we at DCMJ have some issues with the initial draft of DC Mayor Bowser's reforms to DC cannabis legislation – among them a prohibition on the free distribution of cannabis for advocacy purposes, restrictions on the cannabis "gifting economy" that's sprung up in DC in lieu of regulated legal sales, and the continued denial of access to the legal cannabis market for small-scale growers in DC.

"Bring It Home": it's About Where You Live

National Days of Action, April 2-4, 2018

Initiative 71 allows residents of and visitors to the District of Columbia to possess, grow, and give a limited amount of cannabis to other adults. However, the District, like many other states that have legalized cannabis, is preempted by Federal Law, and landlords who rent their properties can limit or prohibit a tenant’s adult use of cannabis, even for medical purposes, on their property...

#Yippie50

"This is a personal statement. There are no spokesmen for the Yippies. We suggest to all reporters that they ask each and every Yippie in Lincoln Park why they have come to Chicago. We are all our own leaders. We realize this list of demands is inconclusive, they are not really demands. For people to make demands of the Democratic Party is an exercise in wasted wish-fulfillment. If we have a demand, it is simply and emphatically that they, along with their fellow inmates in the Republican Party, cease to exist. We demand a society built along the alternative community in Lincoln Park, a society based on humanitarian cooperation and equality, a society which allows and promotes the creativity present in all people and especially our youth." – A. Yippie
For those of you "in the know", I don't have to explain the big anniversary coming up this summer.

Jaws 2: This Time, It's Personal

Just when Jeff Sessions thought it was safe to go back into the water...

As you'll recall a week or two back, AG Jeff Sessions rescinded the Cole Memo, which prevented Federal authorities from interfering with the policies of states which had legalized marijuana.

Much to most everyone's delight, Sessions' action seems to have the opposite effect; Vermont passed a legalization law this week, and Massachusetts is continuing with its plans to begin commercial sales after legalizing this past year.

If the sonofabitch wants a war, he's got one. Bring it.
Free the heads, jail the feds.

"Bad People": DCMJ Returns to the Heritage Foundation

"Bad People", DCMJ at Heritage Foundation, Washington DC 12.08.17 from Mike Flugennock on Vimeo.
A year ago this week, DCMJ showed up at the Heritage Foundation with the gift of an ounce of weed, which they turned down.

On December 8 they returned on less than 24 hours' notice for a snap demo to greet Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was supposed to be speaking to a super ultra double-yum secret closed meeting on US drug policy at the Heritage Foundation.

Sessions didn't show, but DCMJ's still got Heritage's ounce of prime DC bud, any time they're ready.

Blast From Yer Past: "Days Of Our Pole"

"Days Of Our Pole", Washington DC, April 2015 from Mike Flugennock on Vimeo.

Come back with us now, to a simpler, sweeter, more innocent time -- before the last election. There was sunshine and laughter, puppies and kittens... People just seemed to smile more back then.

It was during those pure, innocent days -- April 2015 -- that the DCMJ Crew showed up, at 4:20 on the morning of April 15, to erect its first-ever Liberty Pole and begin the DC Democracy Vigil.

Your Home Should Be A Safe Space!

Despite the personal possession and use of cannabis being legal in DC, residents of Federally-subsidized Section 8 public housing are prohibited from smoking in their homes. Because Congress prohibits DC from enacting Tax'n'Regulate and the DC government prohibits public consumption in bars and clubs, folks in Section 8 have the choice of risking immediate eviction and possible imprisonment by smoking in their homes, or smoking on the street and risking arrest for smoking in public, like this poor working-class slob.

It's no wonder Section 8 is often referred to as "prison you pay rent for".

4 Ways Cannabis Can Kill You

It's been considered a long-established fact that nobody has died due to cannabis -- until now. My extensive research has uncovered these four major ways that cannabis can kill.

Let this be a warning -- to YOU.

Section 8 Smoker: The Sequel

When we last left our hero, he was being busted for public smoking because the District Of Columbia was prevented by Congress from taxing and regulating cannabis, and because public communal consumption is banned in places like bars, cafés, or nightclubs.

Now, let's rewind a bit and follow a different "fork" in the plot, here:

Section 8 Smoker

While it's been legal to possess and consume cannabis in DC, citizens here can still only do it in their private homes, which leaves many rental housing residents -- particularly tenants in Federally-subsidized Section 8 public housing -- in a rough spot.

It's LIT! 4 Arrests at DCMJ U.S. Capitol "Smoke-In"

4 Arrested at DCMJ U.S. Capitol "Smoke-In" Apr 24 2017 from Mike Flugennock on Vimeo.

After last Thursday's arrestees were freed after being jailed on obviously bogus charges, the activists of DCMJ took it to the Capitol steps this afternoon for their "smoke-in" civil disobedience to demand Federal descheduling of cannabis and an end to Congressional interference of DC citizens' right to make their own laws. Four activists were arrested for lighting up on the East Lawn of the Capitol.

US Capitol Police Harass DCMJ "Joint Session", Arrest At Least 6

US Capitol Cops Harass 4/20 "Joint Session", arrest several from Mike Flugennock on Vimeo.

Looks like we got more free publicity than we could handle today at DCMJ's "Joint Session" legal joint giveaway for US Capitol employees at 1st and Constitution Avenue NE, across the street from the Capitol.

Although they were set up on DC territory, on the sidewalk in front of the Reserve Officers' Association building, US Capitol Police chose to leave Federal land and come into DC to harass and arrest several volunteers involved in checking ID's and giving out joints.

Another Herblock Homage

...in which The Kid tries to "bend it like Herblock".

At the instigation of my old BBF and comrade Adam Eidinger at DCMJ, here's a Herblock homage depicting DC's special friends, US Reps. Andy Harris and Jason Chaffetz on the news that 60% of Americans surveyed now support legal marijuana (Gallup, October 2016), on the occasion of the April 24th Capitol Smoke-In.

DCMJ sez "We Won't Go Back!" on Inauguration Day

"We Won't Go Back" #Trump420 Wash DC 01.20.17 from Mike Flugennock on Vimeo.

In what had to be the epicenter of chillaxin' that morning, over 8000 joints were given away legally under DC law by my good buds and comrades at DCMJ at their #Trump420 counterinaugural shindig at Dupont Circle, highlighting the strides made in state drug policy and legalization, and to welcome President The Donald to Washington, DC by declaring that "we won't go back" on the legalization of recreational and medical cannabis.
