Afghan Women's Liberation no. 2 (or, Won't Somebody Think Of The Women?)

When the US first set out inflicting two decades of destruction and misery on Afghanistan the Liberals, true to the old Phil Ochs song, were never more red, white and blue — and the Liberals' most appallingly cynical appeals for support for that debacle came from the "imperial Feminists" who tried to tug our heartstrings with horror stories about burqas, illicit nail salons, and no HBO.

So, it was no surprise when America's Imperial Feminists picked up where they left off, joining the chorus of bitching, pissing, moaning and sour-graping about their being run out of Afghanistan, reviving the tired old bromides about women's rights and how the US "left women behind" when it dragged its bloody ass out of the place after twenty years in the Graveyard Of Empires.

The most unctous of these was an article in The Atlantic which dragged out every one of those tired old arguments, hoary old horseshit so old it's got SCSI ports on the back. What was merely appalling twenty years ago is absolutely godawful today, considering the current abuse of working-class women in the US, and in US satellite states like Saudi Arabia:

One reason that we stayed in Afghanistan so long with nothing to show for it except the safety of women, @CaitlinPacific writes, is that for all of our sins, our default position is freedom.

Says on the author's profile that she traffics in "thought crimes for all occasions". I wouldn't know about that, but that article of hers sure is a goddamn crime, I'll tell ya that for free.

Pussy Hats II: This Time, It's Brunch

Imagine my delight when I learned that the Million Hillary March was going to be returning here to Washington, DC next January – a fresh, new blue wave of vindictiveness, bitterness, denial, exploitation, and all the goddamn astroturf you can handle. Why, the very thought of all this vibrant feminist energy makes me want to charge into the streets and ask to speak to the manager.

Imagine also my amusement to discover that this chickenshit outfit has actually published an "oral history" with the assistance of their comrades at Condé Nast, which is about as grassroots as you can get, kids. Two whole epic years of demonstrative Liberal indignation, laying astroturf, and accomplishing absolute zero – now, there's some serious-ass oral history. Hot damn, hold me back.

Glass Ceiling

When women like Carly Fiorina, Sheryl Sandberg and Hillary Clinton break the "glass ceiling", it's because they're standing on the backs of millions of poor and working-class women who are lucky to see the floor.

The Democratic Party: Graveyard Of Movements

Alright, US Left, time for a little history lesson – and a cautionary tale. Can any of you out there name a single popular democratic people's movement for peace, liberty or social/economic justice which wasn't finally at some point infiltrated, co-opted and bled to death by the Democratic Party? Anybody?

Bueller?

Afghan Women's Liberation

Needless to say, the media environment was one of rah-rah flag-kissing zaniness. So, it was with little surprise that I opened the Washington Post's World News section to find a steaming heap of blather that had to be some of the worst "safari journalism" I'd yet encountered, at least in the Post. With the predictable headline starting with "Lifting The Veil..." in what had to be the most cynical ever attempt to rope Liberals into supporting the brutality, the article attempted to indicate that one of the major "war aims" of the US was to restore "women's rights" in Afghanistan, citing as "success" the fact that the beauty parlors had re-emerged from underground, and that the local video-rental shops had re-opened. Never mind that the Taliban were still forcibly keeping girls from going to school, or forcibly keeping them shrouded in burquas, at least the women of Afghanistan could go out and have their nails done, or rent the entire first season of Sex And The City on high-def DVD.

This piece attempts a more accurate portrayal of the state of "liberation" of Afghan women.
