Death Race 2011

My Cartoon Movement comrades from outside the USA can certainly be forgiven for being so caught up in the recent FIFA bribery scandal that they may have missed this bit of even more appalling news from Bahrain concerning FIA, the governing body for Formula One racing, and its recent decision to go ahead with the Bahrain Grand Prix, which had been cancelled in March owing to a problem with widespread mass peoples’ uprisings.

Even more galling was a gleeful Bahraini racing officlal quoted by Al Jazeera as saying that “stability has returned” after the uprisings had been brutally crushed, and was practically wetting his pants with delight to hear FIA’s decision.

That’s right, folks — mass popular uprisings in Bahrain have finally been violently suppressed by the Bahraini police and military with the help of Saudi troops using weapons sold to them by Barack Obama, and now that that unpleasantness is out of the way… gentlemen, start your engines!*

*Yeah, yeah, I know…they don’t say “gentlemen, start your engines” in Formula One. Just a bit of artistic license. Gimme a break.

Archimedes, Applied

Who's next? Who's next?! C'mon, bring it!

Note to my American readers: this cartoon requires an understanding of basic scientific principles. If in doubt, consult a high-school science teacher — if he or she isn’t busy pushing creationism in class.

Algeria – You're Next!

Boo yah, North Africa! You've Walked Like An Egyptian; now it's time to Rock The Casbah!

I’d hardly had time to catch my breath after millions of courageous Egyptians ran the Mubarak regime out of the country before the scene shifted to Algeria, where they’re getting revved up to fight the Second Battle Of Algiers! Get out there and rock it, Algerians!

LATE UPDATE, 02.15.11 at 08:15 EST:

Stop the metaphorical presses! This cartoon’s just been picked up by Al Jazeera’s “Eye On Algeria” live blog!

Revolution: It's back

Hah, and you thought all the fun ended when the Berlin Wall fell.

As most of you of a certain age will recall, a boatload of American right-wing triumphalists declared “the end of history” around 1989 or ‘90, right about the time the old Soviet “satellite states” were overthrown by vast popular movements and took the xUSSR down with them. Along with Dr. Fukuyama’s famous screed, there were a whole host of others who also declared the era of revolution to be over.

Uh, ohhhhhhh.

Mubarak A Day Late, Dollar Short Shutting Off Internet

Recent events in Tunisia and Egypt
have proven that the Internet and social networking on the Web have been instrumental in organizing and inspiring people to rise up against tyranny and spreading the news, but any desperate dictator out there should know by now that simply shutting off the Internet can’t stop a real revolution — especially in Egypt, where President Mubarak was a day late and a dollar short in trying to stop a popular uprising by crippling the Internet.

Here’s a piece that was inspired by a sign I saw carried by someone at last Saturday’s solidarity demonstration at the Egyptian Embassy:

Fallujah Minuteman

God damn, well, I declare! Have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs,
their motto is 'Don't Tread On Me'!

--grateful dead.

In 1776, gangs of raggedy-assed guerrilla resistance fighters took on the largest, best-equipped, best-trained Imperial Army on the planet, and dished them out a harder licking than they ever expected...and you know the rest. So it is in 2004, when gangs of raggedy-assed guerrilla resistance fighters take on the largest, best-equipped, best-trained Imperial Army on the planet, it's looking once again like King George's goons are going to get a worse whuppin' than they ever expected. Seems as if even as they crow about how much of Fallujah they "control", the largest, best-equipped etc. Imperial Army is actually being surrounded, jumped, and sucker-punched every time they turn around by the aforementioned raggedy-assed guerrillas, as the Resistance spreads across Iraq, and King George's boys are left "squeezing Jello" in Fallujah. And it's to them, the Iraqi resistance, the "Minutemen" of Fallujah, I dedicate this cartoon. Viva la Fallujah!
